How many panels for a round pen, and what size?

You are counting panels and picking a diameter before you order a circle. If the work is mixed, or you have not decided, start at 50 ft. That kit is 15 of our 10-ft panels, one 4.5 ft bow gate, and 32 clamps. A 40 ft kit is 12 panels and 26 clamps. A 60 ft kit is 18 panels and 38 clamps. Round pen size and how many panels you need are the same decision.

This page is not for a rectangular corral, and it is not for treating the 10x10 travel pen as a 40, 50, or 60 ft circle.

On the shop floor we pick in this order:

1. The job. Groundwork on foot, a mix, or regular riding.

2. Diameter. 40, 50, or 60 ft, measured across the center.

3. 10-ft panel math. Our kits are 10 ft by 5 ft panels. Other systems use 12-ft panels. This kit does not.

4. Four rail or five rail. Same steel. Different openings.

5. The site. Level ground, drainage, gate approach, room outside the fence.

14-gauge tube is the steel we weld. It is one published fact in that list. It is not the reason to pick 40 over 60.

Best fit for: Groundwork on foot. Close handling. A settled horse that does not need a wide ridden circle.

Choose it when: The main work stays on the ground. You want the horse close. The site is tight and 40 ft across the center, plus gate clearance, is what you actually have.

Not the first choice when: You plan to ride in it regularly. A canter in 40 ft is tight. The horse leans through the turn the whole way around. That is shop-floor / field feedback, not a score.

Confirm before ordering: Measure 40 ft across the center, not around the outside. Pick 4-rail or 5-rail. Plan footing yourself. The kit does not include it.

Choose it when: You will work on the ground and also ride some. You want more room to balance than 40 ft, without taking a 60 ft pad. Shop FAQ on the catalog: fifty is the most common choice. That is field feedback from how these pens get used.

Not the first choice when: The only work is close groundwork and the site is small. Then 40 ft is the tighter fit. Not the first choice when riding will be the regular job. Then look at 60 ft.

Not the first choice when: The work is groundwork only, or the site will not take a 60 ft circle. Do not order 60 ft to future-proof a yard that cannot hold it.

Confirm before ordering: Walk the full diameter. Check drainage across that pad. Pick 4-rail or 5-rail. Do not use 12-ft panel math on this kit.

10x10 travel pen, $685. Published: 10 ft by 10 ft, 14-gauge steel, powder-coated. No panel count, gate, or clamp bill of materials is written on that SKU. It is not a 40, 50, or 60 ft circle. Do not use the steel-kit panel counts on it.

Signature wooden kit, $3,995. Published: 10 ft gate. Wood excluded. Diameter, rail count, and panel count are not written on that SKU. We do not invent them here.

How many 10-ft panels. Count our panels, not someone else's.

40 ft: 12 panels + the 4.5 ft bow gate + 26 clamps.

50 ft: 15 panels + the 4.5 ft bow gate + 32 clamps.

60 ft: 18 panels + the 4.5 ft bow gate + 38 clamps.

Those counts are published on the shop and on this guide's live kit pages. Do not add a panel to make a gate. The bow gate is already in the kit.

Do not use 12-ft math. A common question is how many 12-ft panels make a 60 ft pen. That math belongs to a different panel system. Other systems use 12-ft panels. This kit does not. Our 60 ft circle is 18 x 10-ft panels plus the bow gate. If you divide a 60 ft circumference by 12, you will order the wrong crate.

Four rail or five rail. Shop FAQ, said shop-floor: five rail for young or untested horses, ponies and minis, or any pen the public can reach. Four rail is lighter and cheaper and is enough for a settled horse. The steel and the welds are the same either way.

No concrete. The panels stand on the ground. Chain-and-pin connectors. No post holes. That is also why you can take the circle apart and set it on new ground. The new ground still has to be fit for a horse.

Footing is site work. Footing is not a line item in the kit. Local soil, rain, and how often you work the pen decide the base. Confirm the pad, drainage, and footing with a trainer or a local contractor who has seen the site. We do not rank footing products here.

Measure diameter across the center. A 50 ft pen is 50 ft through the middle, not 50 ft of fence. Stake the center. Measure out half the diameter. Walk the gate swing. Leave room to mow and to get a horse in and out. Then order the kit that matches that stake, not the kit you wish the yard could hold.
