Shed Row Mare Motel, 4 12x24 Stalls 4-Rail

A mare motel is a row of horse stalls under one welded roofline with a covered breezeway down the middle. It is open-sided rather than enclosed, so air moves through it.

A barn encloses air. A stall kit is one freestanding box. A loafing shed is a shelter the horse uses at will. Those are different jobs. They are not this definition.

The kits on this catalog are welded steel on pipe posts set in concrete. That is the shop difference, not a score against other brands.

Standard cover or fully covered. A standard mare motel roofs the breezeway and the front of each stall. The back of the run stays open to the sky. That is the cheaper build, and the better one in dry country: shade and a dry place to stand, with sun in winter and air in summer.

Fully covered means the roof extends over the whole stall. Worth paying for where rain or snow is regular. Unnecessary in dry country if you wanted that open back.

How many stalls, and what size. Four stalls is the common starting point and covers most private properties. Six, eight, ten, and twelve exist for boarding, breeding, and training. The shed-row SKU that lists 4, 6, 8, or 10 lets you specify the count instead of buying the next size up.

Stall size matters more than count. Most configurations are 12x24. Shop copy: that standing area plus a run is what makes a mare motel work as full-time housing rather than overnight shelter. The 24x24 configuration is listed as four 24x24 stalls with 12x24 covers. The mega is listed as eight stalls, 48x82, with a 15 ft breezeway.

The listed size on the 12x24 SKUs is 12 x 24 ft. That is the stall size, not the building footprint. Stake the whole row, the breezeway, and access. Do not treat 12x24 as the building.

Mare motel or barn. A mare motel for ventilation, cost per horse, and ease of checking stock. Someone walking the breezeway can see the row without opening a door on every stall.

A barn if you need a tack room, hay storage, security, or genuinely cold-weather housing. They solve different problems.

Posts in concrete. Yes. The posts set in concrete. A wide roof over an open structure takes uplift in wind and weight in snow, and those loads pull in opposite directions. It is the part of the build you do not skip.
