If you want a Blacktail loafing shed, buy the kit. The three-wall, wood-excluded pair is the loafing-shed name on this shop. Flat shade, sloped, and the 12x12 enclosed kit are other roofs on the same aisle.

A loafing shed usually means the three-walled version. The horse uses it at will. Most US loafing sheds are timber. Ours are welded steel on concrete-set posts.

About 12x12 of covered ground per horse is the working figure. 12x24 is the size for two that get on. Undersize it and the lowest horse stands in the weather.

Do not order loose sheets and purlins as a substitute for a kit we already weld. The catalog says those parts can be ordered for a new shelter project. Confirm that with the order if you are not buying a kit. We do not write a sheet count or a purlin layout for that path.

Flat or sloped. Sloped where there is rain or snow to shed. Point the low edge away from the doorway so runoff and ice do not land where the horses walk.

Flat covers are shade-first and cost less. That suits dry country. Flat is not the weather roof.

The enclosed 12x12 is closed in from the start, apart from an entry. It is not a later conversion of a shade cover.

Match what is already up. If you are repairing or extending a shelter we built, these are the same types of roof panels, purlins, and ridge caps used on the original structure.

Measure the panel length, exposed width, rib pattern, roof slope, purlin depth, and the distance between supports. Photograph the ridge, eave, fasteners, overlaps, and every place the new material must meet the old roof.

Choose PBR length from the actual roof plane, not the building footprint. Slope changes the required distance. We list 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 20, and 24 ft by 3 ft. Do not assume a length we do not list. Do not assume cutting a much longer sheet is the answer.

If you have the original order, send it. Matching the structure we built is more reliable than picking a sheet from a name alone.

Purlins and ridge stay on that job. The Z-purlin is the stick the sheet lands on. Order it to match the roof we already sold. We list 6 inch and 8 inch profiles in 10, 12, 20, and 25 ft, with the 8 inch pair named for sloped roof. The correct profile depends on the engineered span, spacing, and loads. We do not write those numbers here.

A ridge cap closes the peak where two roof planes meet. Confirm the angle and the overlaps so the cap fits the finished roof, not just the color. If the roof is a flat shade cover, confirm whether you even need a cap.

Warranty and the plan. Roof panels, purlins, and ridge caps carry the manufacturer coating warranty. They are not part of the lifetime warranty on welded frames and welds.

This page does not replace an engineered roof plan. Confirm span, loads, support spacing, and local requirements before you order structural parts.

Posts in concrete. A new kit sets on posts in concrete. An open-sided roof generates lift. The shelters that blow away are the ones that were staked into dirt or weighted down.

The installation page writes 24 in into concrete for shade shelters. That number is on /installation (/installation). It is not written on the shelter or roofing product pages. We do not treat those pages as if they printed it.
