How to choose
What a loafing shed is.
A loafing shed is the three-walled shelter. The horse uses it at will. A run-in is the same job in most yards, which is why the terms get swapped.
Most US loafing sheds are timber-framed with siding. The kits on this catalog are welded steel on concrete-set posts. That is the shop difference, not a score against other brands.
The two SKUs that use the loafing-shed name are the 12x12 and 12x24 three-wall kits. Wood is excluded on both. Flat shade covers, sloped roofs, and the enclosed 12x12 are other jobs on the same aisle.
Covered ground against the horses. About 12x12 of covered ground per horse is the working figure. 12x24 is the size for two that get on. That is published shop FAQ, not a lab number.
If the horses do not get on, do not share one 12x12. The lowest horse stands in the weather and you built a roof for the boss.
Flat or sloped. Sloped where there is rain or snow to shed. Point the low edge away from the doorway so runoff and ice do not land where the horses walk.
Flat covers are shade-first and cost less. That suits dry country. Flat is not the weather roof.
Walls now, not later. The enclosed kits are built that way from the start. They are not a conversion. If you expect to want walls, buy the three-sided or enclosed version now. It is cheaper than adding them to a shade cover afterwards.
A flat shade cover is a roof on posts. Plan it as shade. Do not order it as a future loafing shed.
Posts in concrete. Yes. The posts set in concrete. An open-sided roof generates lift in a storm. The shelters that blow away are the ones that were staked into dirt or weighted down.
The installation page writes 24 in into concrete for shade shelters. That number is on /installation (/installation). It is not written on the shelter product pages. We do not treat the product pages as if they printed it.
Four rail or five rail. Flat shade SKUs print 4-rail or 5-rail. Same 14-gauge steel. Different openings. Rail spacing in inches is not printed.
Sloped SKUs say rails options are available. The count is not written. The enclosed 12x12 and both wood-excluded loafing sheds do not list a rail count. We do not invent those.
