An open New Mexico site may have plenty of visible space without a ready training pad. Set the intended round pen diameter first, then work through surface preparation, access and the difference between a standard steel circle and a wood-insert configuration.
Measure usable ground instead of empty ground
A broad New Mexico yard can make a round pen look easy to place until the working surface and approaches are drawn in. Measure the area you can actually prepare and maintain, including fixed obstacles and changes in grade. Compare that usable area with the complete circle rather than positioning the pen from a distant view of open land.
Blacktail lists standard 40, 50 and 60 ft steel round pens. Discuss the intended use and horses with the responsible trainer or caretaker when selecting among those diameters. Then leave space outside the panels for access and maintenance. Include surface maintenance in the location decision
